A Maasai headpiece, beaded by hand in Kenya. A wide band in red, yellow, orange, green and blue sits across the forehead, held by three gold-tone bars. A narrow beaded strip rises over the crown, and a short drop falls to rest between the brows, finished with a white button and a small silver charm. Two fine silver chains loop from the temples across the cheeks.

Worn by Maasai women for weddings and celebrations. Every bead is placed by hand, so no two are exactly alike.

The story of Maasai beadwork

Every colour has a meaning.

Maasai beadwork is a language, made by women and threaded bead by bead. The colours are never chosen at random, and a piece is read as much as it is worn. Glass beads reached the Maasai through trade in the late 1800s; before that, adornments were made from seeds, bone, shell and clay. The patterns have changed with every generation, but the meaning in the colours has stayed.

Red · bravery and unity
Blue · the sky that brings rain
Green · the land and health
Yellow · the sun and growth
White · peace and milk
Black · the people
Orange · hospitality and warmth
