The story of the materials

Made from the land and the sea.

Long before glass beads, people across East Africa adorned themselves with what the land and the coast provided: seeds, bone, wood and shell. Cowrie shells travelled the trade routes of the Indian Ocean for centuries, used as money and worn as charms, and on Maasai wedding collars they stand for peace. Coconut shell, cut into discs and polished by hand, carries the warmth of the Kenyan coast.
