The story of Maasai sandals
Made for long walks.
Maasai herders walk long distances every day, moving cattle across hot ground, sharp stones and thorns in search of grass and water. Their first sandals were cut from cattle hide and tied with leather straps, shaped to the wearer's foot. From the mid-20th century, soles cut from old tyres joined them: tougher, and easy to mend far from town. Ours keep the leather and add the beadwork Maasai women are known for.
